Stool collection for Salmonella and Shigella culture

Stool samples for Salmonella and Shigella testing should be collected on three consecutive days. Before collecting the sample, get 3 swabs with Stuart transport medium from the collection point.

  • Before passing stools, the urinary bladder should be completely emptied.
  • Collect the stool in a clean, dry container (bedpan or another container designed for this purpose).
  • Use a swab to take a stool sample and place it in the transport medium.
  • Store samples in transport medium at a room temperature.
  • On each sample, write the date and time of collection.

On the third day, which is the day of the last sample collection, all the samples must be delivered to the laboratory in the morning.

DAILY URINE COLLECTION

Daily urine collection is performed over a 24-hour period.

  • On the first day of daily urine collection, the first morning urine should be passed into the toilet.
  • Each subsequent urine portion should be completely collected in a container for urine collection. Make a note of the time the urine collection has started.
  • Store the container with the collected urine in the refrigerator.
  • The procedure for collecting each portion of urine should be repeated until the next day.
  • On the next morning, complete the urine collection at the same time it was started, i.e. if the collection was started at 7:00 am, it should be completed next day at 7:00 am.
  • When the urine collection is completed, thoroughly mix the entire contents of the container, measure the volume and then pour a sample (approximately 50-100ml) into a disposable container and deliver it to the laboratory.
  • Make sure to write on a sheet attached to the sample the exact start and end time of collection and the total volume of collected urine.

If for some reason even one portion of urine passed during the collection was not transferred to the container for urine collection, the collection should be carried out again on another day.
