Collecting urine for culture and general analysis

Urine collection in adults:

First morning urine should be collected for the analysis. Urine for culture should be collected in a sterile container. Urine for general analysis should be collected in a single-use container.

  • Before collecting urine, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and wipe them with a clean towel.
  • Before urinating, wash the urethral region thoroughly with soap and water: women – the vulva area from the front towards the anus, men – the glans after pushing back the foreskin.
  • Urinate. Important: urinate the first small amount into the toilet to flush the urethra of bacteria and epithelial tissue. Collect a few ml of urine for culture in a sterile container. Several dozen milliliters (50-100 ml) of urine for general test should be passed into a single-use container. The final portion of urine should be passed into the toilet.

Collecting urine for culture in infants or young children:

  • Undress the baby from the waist down in a warm room (preferably in the morning after feeding).
  • Wash the urethral region thoroughly: girls – the vulva area from the front towards the anus, boys – the glans after pushing back the foreskin.
  • Lift the infant and massage the back muscles along the spine from top to bottom. When the baby starts urinating, place the prepared container to catch the urine, passing the first portion of urine as described above. Important: Urine for culture should not be collected in a stick-on bag.

The urine sample should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible. If this is not possible, store the sealed container in the refrigerator until it can be delivered.
