Preparation for transabdominal prostate ultrasound

  • The examination includes an assessment of the urinary bladder, a general assessment of the prostate (prostate gland), and an assessment of urine retention after emptying the bladder.
  • The necessary condition for examining the prostate through the abdominal wall is that the bladder should be as full as possible. Otherwise, gases in the terminal intestinal tract prevent the ultrasound wave from reaching the gland.
  • To ensure that the bladder is properly filled, you should drink 1 to 1.5 liters of non-carbonated fluids more than an hour before the scheduled test time and not urinate. After the first part of the test, the patient goes to the toilet and returns to the office to measure the amount of urine remaining in the bladder.
  • For the examination you should (if possible) bring the results of previous ultrasound examinations of the area or results of other tests related to the problem.
